Galeria Farol Arte e Ação is a contemporary art gallery devoted to the notion of mobility (eg: urban mobility, transit between languages, art practices, fields of thought, etc.). It is a space of reception, forwarding and communication through art. The gallery project is part of Farol Arte e Ação, an artist run iniciative that highlights contemporary thinking from a local perspective. Established in the complex of Bicicletaria Cultural; an infra-structural center for cyclists and cultural events downtown the southern city of Curitiba, Brasil; and neighboring the Association of Cyclists – CicloIguaçu; Farol has undertaken a series of exhibitions and events aligned with contemporary practices specific of its dynamic urban environment.
Considering that aspects of production, reception and distribution of art are essential elements for a critical approach to the art business, Farol places itself as a research model questioning what is the role of an art galery in 2017, 2018, and so forth. The fact that Farol is periferic to the mainstreams of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo is strategic once it seeks to provoke, fuel, and determine the displacement of a common sense of currencies in exchange (usually from perifery to centers) in dialogue with those social, economic and creative sceneries.
The word farol means lighthouse as well as headlight. From a cold southern brasilian city, Farol signals the pulse of a horizon within fields of experience.
In 2017 Farol introduces the movements of errant thinking, nomadic forms and site-specific practices through a research programm that takes place in a residential building projected by the architect Frederico Kirchgassner, pioneer of the modern architecture next to names such as Gregori Warchavchik followed by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, Affonso Eduardo Reidy, Attilio Correa Lima, the brothers Marcelo, Milton e Maurício Roberto, Paulo Mendes da Rocha.
