Anja Ibsch (Berlin), 1968 geboren und seit 1993 als Installations- und Performancekünstlerin tätig, schafft Werke, die sich intensiv mit der Erforschung von persönlichen, kulturellen und sozialen Aspekten der menschlichen Präsenz beschäftigen. Im Zuge dessen befasst sich die Künstlerin in ihrer Recherche mit dem Ausloten von Toleranzgrenzen des eigenen Körpers, dem innersten Stoff der Performancekunst. Häufig vermittelt über Mythen und Ikonisches, über Metaphernkomplexe wie Opfer und Offenbarung, sucht sie in ihren Arbeiten Verbindungslinien zwischen ihrem Körper und der Erde, besser gesagt: der Erdhaftigkeit als Prinzip. In ihren zahlreichen Performances, die sie überall in Europa, in Asien und Amerika realisierte, arbeitete sie mit der Einverleibung von Staub des jeweils spezifischen Ortes, bot ihre Haut als Oberfläche und Nistplatz für Würmer an oder schmolz Eis auf ihren Augen, vollführte also sehr harte Eingriffe in das eigene Selbst. Es ist eine Art und Weise mit den „Zellen zu denken“, das „Erinnern der Zellen“ zu aktivieren, so beschreibt die Künstlerin ihr Vorgehen selbst, eine sehr biologistisch motivierte Sinngebung also. Bildhaft werde hier „ein Stellvertreter“, „ein Doppelgänger“ als Repräsentation gebaut, das Ergebnis, die Kunst, ist ein kristallisiertes Gespräch der beiden: des eigenen Körpers und des Kunstkörpers.

In her work, Anja Ibsch characteristically tests her bodily limits, creating images that combine conceptual concerns with tasks of endurance or physical strength. For the audience, these images work to transform the way we view or understand the performer’s physical identity. At the same time, the works engage the performer in a changing perception of her relationship to the world around her. Ibsch creates her work in response to the circumstances that present themselves, adapting to local environments and situations. Anja Ibsch has been actively working as an artist and curator in the areas of performance and installation since 1993. Currently based in Berlin, she creates intense works that explore personal, cultural and social aspects of human presence while researching the endurance and tolerance levels of her body. Frequently inspired by myths of sainthood, sacrifice and release, her work emphasizes and extends connections between her body and the earth. Her varied actions have included eating dust, offering the surface of her skin as a nesting ground for worms, and melting ice on her eyes.
